The gunman who killed one police officer and wounded four more in an ambush is a former Army veteran.
Matthew Riehl, 37, has been named as the killer behind the mass shooting in Highlands Ranch in the US state of Colorado.
Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock told reporters: "He knew we were coming."
The officer who was killed, Deputy Zackari Parrish, 29, joined the force just seven months ago, and was a married father of two young children. He died after being shot multiple times.
The other six victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Riehl was known to police and was reportedly a US Army veteran who toured Iraq between 2009-2010.
He had left a number of disturbing videos on YouTube including one in which he referred to local police as "Nazis".
Police had earlier said an "active shooter" situation was underway and a heavily-armed SWAT team was preparing to enter an apartment complex where the suspect was believed to be holed up.
A bomb squad was also called to the scene just south of Denver, with neighbours being told to shelter in place and stay away from windows.
A police spokesman wrote on Twitter: "Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance resulting in shots fired. Five deputies shot by suspect.
